Welcome to the trip to Guyana. Arrive in Georgetown and be transferred to Cara Lodge, a 150-year-old heritage house converted into a small hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore Georgetown on your own or relax at the hotel.
Built in the 1940s, Cara Lodge has a long and romantic history associated with it and was the home of the first Lord Mayor of Georgetown. Over the years it has hosted many dignitaries including Edward VII, President Jimmy Carter, HRH Prince Charles, HRH Prince Andrew, and Mick Jagger. All the rooms reflect the traditional building style of Guyana.
This morning enjoy a guided tour of the city. Visit a cross-section of the town's most interesting spots, the most famous being St. George’s Cathedral. The Cathedral is one of the world’s tallest freestanding wooden buildings and was consecrated in 1892. The story of the cathedral is told inside on tablets and memorials of a historical and sentimental nature. Walk along the Avenue of the Republic and see impressive structures such as the Public Library, Town Hall, Victoria Law Courts and St. Andrews Kirk. Go bargain hunting at Stabroek Market, once described as a “bizarre bazaar”. Finally, visit the Botanical Gardens and zoo, the National Museum, and Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology.
In the afternoon, you have a briefing about the overland trip and prepare your gear for the next day.
This morning depart Georgetown at 0630hrs, traveling for 8 hours, passing through the bauxite town of Linden, then through miles and miles of lush rain forest and rolling hills, stopping briefly at ‘58’ where you enjoy a vegetarian lunch or fried local fish or chicken (mode of transport could be 4x4, bus, or truck and depends on number of guests). Rejuvenated, continue your journey to the bustling gold-mining town of Mahdia, then to Pamela Landing where you travel by boat for 2 ½ hours to Amatuk. Here, on this beautiful island of white sand with the 170 ft drop of Amatuk Falls just a few yards away, you camp for the night
Take a refreshing bath in the river and enjoy a sumptuous meal before climbing into your hammock.
Leave on foot, trekking through the jungle, swimming across creeks and walking across jungle bridges (tree trunks). A short boat-ride through the rapids will bring you to Waratuk where you camp for the night.
The next morning, after breakfast, you set off on foot for Tukiet with the enigmatic Ibini mountain range in the distance as your constant companion. Another short boat ride and you reach just in time for lunch at Tukiet, at the bottom of Kaieteur Falls. A cool dip in the river with the ‘Old Man’s Beard’, the beautiful Kaieteur Falls flowing gently down a steep drop, and a healthy meal will put you in top gear to begin your climb up the ‘O my God’ mountain.
With your backpack strapped securely onto your back and your water bottle within easy reach you begin your ascend. After four and a half exhilarating hours of climbing, you eventually reach the top. A rewarding sight awaits you in the form of the mighty Kaieteur Falls, the highest single-drop waterfall in the world. A peaceful night’s rest at the Kaieteur Guest House will refresh you for the next day’s activities.
Take a tour around Kaieteur Park today. See Kaieteur Falls from several vantage points that offer excellent photo opportunities. With stealth and a little patience you can get a close- up view of the beautiful, but poisonous ‘golden frog’ and, if you’re lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of the brilliantly coloured, orange ‘Cock-of-the-rock’ bird. See many carnivorous plants, some of which feed on insects. Also, see wild flowers, including the decorative Heliconia, that are abundant in this area.
Head back to Kaieteur Guest House for dinner and rest.
Fly to Georgetown with a final, spectacular aerial view of Kaieteur Falls, the gorge and the awe-inspiring expanse of rain forest and rivers. The rest of the day is at leisure.
This is the end of your Guyana Wildlife Tour. Be transferred to the airport for your flight home.
Fitness is vital for this level of activity, as the environment traversed may be remote and challenging. These rugged experiences include long walks, trekking, cycling or rafting in isolated areas through variable weather conditions for up to eight to ten hours a day. These trips are usually 13 to 19 days in duration. Maximum altitude reached will be 4000m and you need to be very fit in order to withstand the weather conditions. Good physical condition is essential and previous hill-walking experience or preparation is advisable.
