Your Sri Lanka nature tour begins on arrival at Colombo Airport where you are transferred to Udawalawe (4.5 hours approx.). Check into Elephant Lane Hotel and go on a 4WD jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park in the evening.
The Park is known for its large elephant population. On your safari there is a chance you will spot leopards, sloth bears, sambars, water buffaloes, golden jackals, and toque macaques amongst other mammals. The Park is a prime destination for bird watching. Some of the endemic species that can be seen here include the Sri Lanka spurfowl, red-faced malkoha, Sri Lanka grey hornbill, brown-capped babbler, and Sri Lanka junglefowl. Look for mugger crocodiles in the waters.

After breakfast, transfer to Belihuloya and check in to your hotel (2 hours approx.). Your holiday becomes an adventure tour today as you go on a nature trek to Kinchigune Village in the evening. The original village of Kinchigune is now totally submerged in the waters of the Samanala wewa, and was discovered recently. The original inhabitants of this village were engaged in the steel industry in the 2nd century BC, and it is believed that they supplied battle weapons to the King of Sri Lanka, King Dutugemunu, who ruled over the island at that time.
The diverse and beautiful Kinchigune Nature Trail is approximately 6kms and begins at the River Garden Resort in Belihuloya. Venture through paddy fields, cross rivers, and pass local villages. This is an ideal opportunity to learn about the local agricultural systems and the simple ways of rural life in Sri Lanka. Along the way, nature lovers will spot several types of beautiful birds and butterflies endemic to Sri Lanka, and you can spend some time at some of the small waterfalls found in the area. The trail ends where the Belihuloya River meets the Samanala Wewa Reservoir. From there, it is a short climb up through the verdant, and ever-changing forest to the Kinchigune Eco Lodge.
Then go canoeing in Samanala Wewa. An experienced guide will accompany you, should you wish, and you will be supplied with modern life jackets. A full orientation will be offered for those who are new to canoeing. The Samanala Wewa Reservoir is named after the Sinhalese word ‘samanala’, meaning ‘butterfly’, hinting not only at the huge number of butterflies in the area but also the actual shape of the Reservoir. The word ‘wewa’ literally means ‘tank’, another term often used to describe Sri Lankan reservoirs. The surrounding majestic mountains add to the idyllic setting of the Reservoir.
Dinner is served at the hotel. The rooms at River Garden Resort are very spacious, clean and modern, and guests are assured a good night’s sleep while listening to nature’s very own orchestra! The restaurant serves Eastern, Western, and Chinese cuisine, and has a well-stocked bar.
Transfer to Kandy after breakfast and check in to your hotel (3.5 hours approx.). In the evening, go on a city tour of Kandy and see a cultural show. Strategically nestled amidst three mountain ranges, Kandy was initially built in this location as the mountains acted as a natural fortress and protected the land against attack. Kandy’s main architectural monuments date mainly from the 19th Century when King Vikrama Rajasinha, the last King of Kandy, constructed many new buildings.
The cultural show will stage Kandy’s vibrant heritage. With colorful traditional outfits and agile movements, the Kandyan dancers, drummers, and fire-walkers evoke images of pageantry and traditions past.
Dinner is served at the hotel. Queen’s Hotel is located in Kandy near the Kandy Lake, and the world-renowned Temple of the Tooth Relic of the Buddha. It is a historic building that used to be a Governor’s mansion. The rooms face the Lake, The Temple of the Tooth Relic of the Buddha, the pool or the scenic mountains. The Queen's has 54 rooms with attached bathrooms and hot and cold water. The Pub Royal serves alcoholic, non-alcoholic beverages, and snacks.
After breakfast, head to the Peradeniya Junction Railway Station to board the Expo Rail train carriage for a ride to Nanu Oya (4hours approx.). Go on a city tour of Nuwara Eliya, often referred to as ‘Little England’. Nuwara Eliya has a climate unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka. Due to its high elevation it offers a cooler and more invigorating climate than lower regions. Colonised by the British, the outskirts of the Sri Lanka’s highest town still retain their old world charm and many of the original Hotels still retain their grandiose colonial style.
Head back to Kandy for dinner.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight home (3hours approx.).
