Your Brazilian holiday starts from Manaus. Our tour leader will meet you at Hotel Tropical at 04:00 PM. We then embark on our cruise on Motor Yacht Tucano. We sail upstream on the Rio Negro and as we proceed we will learn more about the Amazon ecosystem.
By late afternoon we enter one of the world’s largest river island systems, the Anavilhanas Archipelago. The boat will move along a winding channel with rainforest on both sides in a riot of brilliant vegetation. Weather permitting, we go for an excursion in the dense flooded forest known as the Igapó. We may see some Squirrel Monkeys and hear the growls of Howler Monkeys echoing through the primitive rainforest. The Amazon has one of the famous habitat of birds on the globe and we are sure to see some of these brightly colored avian species perched on the treetops.
We return to the Tucanpo for hors d’oeuvres on the observation deck and a toast to the rainforest sunset. After dinner, we will embark on our launches in search of nocturnal creatures such as the Caiman, the Amazon’s crocodiles. We may chance upon a large night bird such as the Potoo with its bulging eyes and large mouth adapted to swallow the huge Mariposa Moth.
Later this evening our vessel will weigh anchor and we will voyage downstream through the night to the Xiborena Peninsula that divides two of the world’s famous rivers: the Rio Negro and the Amazon River.
The day starts early. We visit the Lago Janauari Ecological Park, a dense forest that is flooded with the coffee colored water of the Amazon River. We explore a labyrinth of small channels overhung with gargantuan trees and vines as we listen to the chatter of creatures in the undergrowth. Keep your eyes open for Monkeys, Three Toed Sloths, and the occasional Collared Anteater.
We return to the Motor Yacht Tucano for a hearty breakfast by about mid morning and you have sometime to relax. By late morning we foray off the vessel again to explore the region around us, rich with diverse wildlife.
After lunch, we navigate downstream to “Encontra das Aguas”, the several mile long line, where two of the world’s greatest rivers, Rio Negro and Amazon meet. The dark and light waters run side by side for several miles without mixing. You may spot Pink River Dolphins and Grey River Dolphins leap and cavortalong this stark line of contrasting currents. Later, we navigate upstream on the Amazon River until the late afternoon.
By late afternoon we reach a channel on the south bank of the Amazon where, conditions permitting, we can visit the lake, Lago Janauacá.
Here you see a fascinating type of forest ecosystem known as the Varzea. We get into the launches and glide down narrow channels and may spot some species that are endemic to the South side of the Amazon River. Tonight we will foray out in our launches to look for nocturnal life. Don’t be surprised if you spot the glowing eyes of a Caiman under the beam of our powerful spotlights!
We begin our day with an early launch excursion. Towards mid-morning, we will go for a village walk.
About midday the vessel will return to the deep brown and forceful current of the Amazon River. Our destination this afternoon will be decided by the Captain of the vessel. We will go either to the north or south side of the Amazon River, depending on the season and the weather. The choice will depend on whichever region offers us the best chance of observing wildlife. We spend the rest of the day exploring the wilderness of this tropical paradise.
Today morning, we will scout for more of these amazing creatures of the Amazon. On our mid-morning excursion we visit local homesteaders and walk through their gardens, learning how this tradition helps families survive in this remote region. If time permits we also visit one of the river towns where trade still thrives in goods that have been grown, caught, or collected within this vast rainforest.
As we have lunch we turn the bows of Motor Yacht Tucano downstream on the Amazon River and we will navigate east with the swift current. Through the afternoon we move in and out of islands that dot the North bank of the river, enjoying vistas of forest and homesteads along the river banks.
By late afternoon we will be near Rio Negro. We venture out for one more excursion along a narrow channel called Parana Xiborena, alternatively we return to Lago Janauari Ecological Park.
At sunset we slowly ascend the Rio Negro, and pass along Porto de Manaus, a world renowned port; but we won't be halting here.
Tonight we sample the national drink of Brazil, the Caipirinha and have a farewell dinner.
Your holiday in Brazil ends today. You can get off the vessel at the riverside dock of the Hotel Tropical. If you have an early morning flight to catch and need to get off the vessel even more earlier, please let us know in advance.
