Welcome to Peru. Upon arrival in Lima you will be met and transferred to your hotel where you will have a chance to freshen up.
Tour of Lima
You will be met in the morning and taken on a tour of Lima to visit the most representative parts of colonial Lima, a UNESCO "World Heritage" site. The tour will include visits to the San Francisco Monastery, an architectural masterpiece and the Larco Museum, housed in a 18th century colonial mansion that holds the most extensive collection of pre-Columbian art in Peru. The Larco Museum contains fine examples of textile work, one of which has a world record-breaking 398 threads per inch, as well as the tools ancient Peruvians used to produce metals, huaco ceramics and gold and silver pieces with semiprecious stones.
Transfer to Cusco, visit Plaza de Armas
Today you will be met at your hotel in time for your early morning flight to Cusco (Domestic flight not included, your PlanetWildlife representative will be happy to arrange this for you). You will have the afternoon to soak up the atmosphere of the Plaza de Armas. It is worth remembering to take it easy and eat lightly while your body adjusts to being at high altitude.
Tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
You will be met early in the morning and taken for a tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Following the route of the Urabamba river the Sacred Valley contains some of the most important Incan ruins. The tour includes a visit to the market and agricultural ruins at Pisac and a stop for lunch in Urubamba. Also included is a visit to the beautiful Inca village and fortress of Ollantaytambo and later a quick stop at the Quechua village of Chinchero before heading to your hotel late in the afternoon.
You will have the chance to freshen up before dinner and then relax in the serenity of the Sacred Valley.
Transfer to Aguas Calientes, and tour of Ruins
You will transfer today to the little town of Aguas Calientes, nestled at the bottom of the valley below the famous Machu Picchu ruins. After checking into your hotel you will have a guided tour of the ruins. In the evening you will have the chance to relax in the hotel.
Explore Machu Picchu.
You will rise early this morning to catch the first bus up to Machu Picchu. By doing this you will have the chance to explore more of the ruins, with the knowledge you gained from the previous day . Another advantage of visiting at this time is the potential to climb the Wayna Picchu peak; only 400 hundred people a day are allowed to climb to the heights to enjoy an unprecedented view of Machu Picchu ruins and the surrounding valleys.
You will then transfer back to Cusco by train in the afternoon in time to freshen up at your hotel before an evening meal.
Visit the Ancient Incan Capital
Today you will enjoy a tour of the ancient Incan capital city. Your tour will start at the Santo Domingo convent monastery. This former colonial monastery was once the Koricancha temple, one of the most important temples dedicated to the worship of the sun. According to the chronicles, it was covered in gold leaf and filled with golden representations of nature. You will then be driven into the countryside outside Cusco to visit some of the remarkable Inca ruins in the area. They include the cult centre of Sacsayhuaman, the temple and amphitheatre of Kenko and the Red Fortress of Puca Pucara. The tour will finish with a visit to the Pre-Columbian Art Museum.
Transfer to Iquitos
Transfer to the airport in the morning for your flight to Iquitos (Domestic flight not included, your PlanetWildlife representative will be happy to arrange this for you). You will be met at the airport and be transferred to your hotel where you can freshen up and relax before heading into the Amazon rainforest tomorrow.
Transfer to Majuna Lodge
Transfer to the airport in the morning for your flight to Iquitos. You will be met at the airport and take a 3hr boat ride up the mighty Amazon river to Mujuna Rainforest Lodge. After a chance to freshen up and have lunch you will be taken on an orientation walk around the forest surrounding the lodge.
Jungle Trek
After an early breakfast you will trek to nearby oxbow lakes where giant river otters and the mysterious hoatzin are regularly spotted. On the way you may be lucky enough to spot various mammals including sloth, capuchin monkey, howler monkey, squirrel monkey, pygmy marmoset and brocket deer.
Amazon Boat Trip & visit a Jungle Community
An early start today will begin with a bird watching trip to spot some of the huge diversity of birdlife that lives in the region including various species of parrot, macaw, toucan, egret and raptors. You will then take a boat to the other side of the Amazon River to experience the difference between high and low jungle. On the river keep your eyes open for sightings of spectacled caiman and pink river dolphin. After lunch at the lodge you will visit the local village of Yanayacu home to the jungle community of San Juan.
Transfer to Lima
After breakfast, if time allows, you will have a last chance to explore the forests before heading back to Iquitos in time to catch your flight back to Lima (Domestic flight not included, your PlanetWildlife representative will be happy to arrange this for you) where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. You can spend the afternoon and evening exploring the city or just relaxing.
This is the last day of your Peruvian Holiday.
You will be met and transferred to the airport for your onward flight home.
Fitness is vital for this level of activity, as the environment traversed may be remote and challenging. These rugged experiences include long walks, trekking, cycling or rafting in isolated areas through variable weather conditions for up to eight to ten hours a day. These trips are usually 13 to 19 days in duration. Maximum altitude reached will be 4000m and you need to be very fit in order to withstand the weather conditions. Good physical condition is essential and previous hill-walking experience or preparation is advisable.
