Today’s excursion takes you to Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for an action-packed day. Translated from Mayan, “Sian Ka’an” means "where the sky is born" or "gift from the sky". There are 23 known archaeological sites here with relics dating up to 2,300 years old. The unique geography and wetlands of the Reserve are home to 103 mammal species and 336 species of birds. Among its varied habitats Sian Ka’an hosts beaches, wetlands, savannah, dunes, coral, reefs, mangroves, cenotes (sinkholes), and lagoons!

There was a diverse population of people living here, resulting in the varied architectural styles you’ll see at the site. El Castillo, or the Temple of Kukulkan, is the most dominating step pyramid here with 365 steps, one for each day of the year. The Maya people not only invented the 365-day calendar but also had advanced astronomical skills with the ability to predict eclipses.
