Arrive at beautiful Cancun and check into Rey del Caribe EcoHotel, located in downtown Mexico.
Your wildlife photography tour begins at sunny Cancun where a professional photography guide will greet you and brief you about your trip. Cancun, with its pristine beaches, fascinating marine life, and world-class holiday resorts, is the gateway to the Mayan world.
Spend the day at leisure at Rey del Caribe EcoHotel, an oasis of tranquillity in downtown Cancun. The hotel's traditional colonial facade is cheerfully painted with a Mexican flair. The owners are in residence to make you feel at home and give you a taste of traditional Mexican hospitality. All rooms open onto a courtyard that has a swimming pool and hot tub. Rooms have two full-size beds, air conditioner, television, hot and cold water, and a fully equipped kitchenette.
Explore a beautiful coral reef and walk through the Mayan Jungle.
Take a boat trip to your own private spot in Palancar Reef to photograph a wide diversity of colourful corals and fish like barracudas, angelfish, stingrays, parrotfish, butterfly fish and grunts.
In the evening you walk through the Mayan Jungle to photograph wild jaguars, spider monkeys, insects, reptiles, and other interesting animals.
Explore the archaeological remains at Tulum before going snorkelling at Gran Cenote.
Discover the archaeological site of Tulum today. Tulum was one of the last built and inhabited cities of Maya. It is one of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites today and offers stunning views of the Caribbean from a cliff. You’ll have an interesting photographing opportunity here as a large population of iguanas can be seen resting on archaeological structures.
Later, snorkel in the amazing Gran Cenote (sinkhole) where you can take underwater pictures of impressive stalactites and stalagmites in its crystal clear water.
During the summer months you can enjoy a special night hike at the beach to see and participate in the marine turtle project where you can even adopt a turtle!
Stay the night at Los Lirios Hotel, a beach hotel at Tulum. The hotel features cabanas on the beach, with four rooms each. All rooms have private bath with tub and shower, air conditioner, living room, and a private terrace with chairs and hammock.
Enjoy bird watching in Sian Ka’an, see serpents hanging off the roof of a cave as they prey on bats, go on a night bicycle ride through the jungle, and see crocodiles on a boat trip!
Begin the day with a bird watching hike to take pictures of exotic birds in Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The unique geography and wetlands of the Reserve are home to 103 mammal species and 336 species of birds. Look for brown pelicans, Olivaceous cormorants, magnificent frigate birds, great blue herons, snowy eagles, white ibises, and ospreys among other species.
Later travel to Kantemo town, home to a living Maya community. From here, a local guide will take you to the famous “Cave of Hanging Serpents”. This is the only known cave where boa constrictors have adapted to hanging from the ceiling and preying on bats as they take flight at dusk! There’s also an azure pool here where you can see white, blind marine life that has adapted to life in permanent darkness.
End the day with a night bicycle ride through the jungle and a boat trip to see crocodiles!
Stay the night at Faisan y el Venado, a basic hotel with clean rustic rooms. The restaurant here is famous for its local cuisine.
Today’s activities include bird watching, photographing a gorgeous cenote, and exploring Rio Lagartos Reserve.
Revel in another early bird watching hike before travelling to the colonial city of Valladolid to photograph the beautiful San Lorenzo Oxman Cenote with its unique swing rope.
Head for Rio Lagartos Reserve where you can see the largest population of pink flamingos in America! Around 388 resident and migratory birds have been identified here along with 59 species of mammals, and 80 species of reptiles. The beach at Rio Lagartos is an important nesting habitat for green and hawksbill turtles.
Stay at Tabasco Río, a family-run hotel located in the main plaza of Rio Lagartos, a few meters away from the picturesque promenade. All rooms have air conditioning, fans, cable tv, and hot water.
Photograph pink salt pools at Las Coloradas and the archaeological wonders of Chichen Itza.
Travel to Las Coloradas where you can drive right up to pink coloured salt pools! It’s quite an astonishing sight to see entirely pink water bodies next to white sand, and it makes for great photography as well!
Then head for Chichen Itza to photograph the remnants of a large pre-Columbian Maya city. Chichen Itza is one of the New Seven World Wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. El Castillo, or the Temple of Kukulkan, is the most dominating step pyramid here with 365 steps, one for each day of the year.
Stay at Rey del Caribe for the night.
You have an adventurous day today as you swim with whale sharks or sailfish, depending on the weather.
Your activity for the day will depend on the season.
Summer Activity-Whale Shark Tour: Photograph and snorkel with the biggest fish in the world, the amazing but harmless whale shark! You can also see manta devil rays and other marine animals in the water. You’ll be swimming here in one of the most beautiful beaches of the world-Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres.
Winter Activity-Sailfish Adventure: Snorkel with one of the fastest fish in the world, sailfish, as they hunt their prey. These speed devils can reach speeds of up to 30m per second (120kmph)! Watch in awe as the sailfish chase sardines, and try your hand at photographing nature at play.
Return to Cancun in the afternoon to relax and enjoy the beach.
Travel home.
Your Mexico wildlife photography tour ends with a transfer to the airport for your flight home.
Requires a spirit of adventure and some degree of fitness, as the trip might consist of many activities or long journeys. These adventures involve walking, trekking, hiking, cycling, rafting, sea kayaking, or driving for long hours, at times for up to six to eight hours a day at a steady pace. The maximum altitude is 3000m, so it requires you to be reasonably physically fit because you may be travelling in extreme weather conditions. The trips are usually 6 to 12 days in duration.
