Relax at Explorers Camp in Gorongosa National Park and prepare for your exciting nine-day holiday.
Your holiday starts at the beautiful Gorongosa National Park located at the southern end of the Africa’s Great Rift Valley. Fly in to Beria (flight not included in tour cost), and your personal driver will take you to the Gorongosa National Park (three and a half hours away).
Gorongosa’s dramatic scenery comprises savannah dotted with acacia trees, forests sprouting out of the sand, salt pans (in season), and even rainforests. This unique combination of ecosystems is suited to accommodate a diverse range of wildlife.
Settle in to the tented Explorers Camp situated in an exclusive operating section of the park. Each suite has an alfresco bathroom comprising an eco-innovative waterless loo and a fantastic wash-in-the-wild shower designed to give you a feeling of the outdoors and privacy at the same time. Your suite also features enormous double beds with snug duvets, cotton linens, and plush towels for your comfort. The camp offers an open-air library and lounge, a campfire, and hammocks to lie in, as well as a spacious canvas mess tent to relax in when the weather isn’t cooperating. Al fresco dining is their specialty and meals can be set up almost anywhere requested.
Over the next few days you will be spending quality time with the local flora and fauna. Go on bush walks, enjoy game drives, visit local villages, and take in the friendly hospitality of Explorers Camp.
While exploring with your experienced guides see mammals such as vervet monkeys, baboons, samango (blue) monkeys, lions, elephants, hippos, and bush babies. If you’re lucky, you might also spot blue wildebeests, blue duikers, zebras, or leopards. There are also more than 400 bird species that can be seen here including the grey heron, great white egret, African fish eagle, hooded vulture, long-crested eagle, African wood owl, and amethyst sunbird. While the violet civil war in Mozambique (1977-1992) caused a dramatic drop in wildlife in the park, animal populations are back on the rise. The Gorongosa Restoration Project has been working extensively to restore the park to its former glory.
Take sundowners on sandy riverbanks and enjoy brunch amongst old ruins. Explore the quaint local village and learn about the conservation-based restoration project within the park. Only available during and just after the wet season, boating, canoeing, and mekoro-boat safaris provide a hippo’s-eye view of stunning waterlogged areas, all covered in a carpet of beautiful purple and pink water lilies.
Spend the day relaxing at the beachfront Nuarro Lodge in a tranquil setting.
Fly back to Nampula from Beira and clear customs (flight not included in tour cost). Travel for four hours to Nuarro Lodge, where you will spend the next few days, and treat yourself to some well-deserved beach relaxation. Situated in Nanatha Bay, the lodge boasts a beautifully remote setting and great diving opportunities. Luxurious beachfront chalets afford beautiful views of the bay, and feature refreshing indoor/outdoor showers. Relax on the sun loungers or gaze at the blue sky as you gently swing in your hammock. The evening is at leisure.
Indulge in a host of optional activities including scuba diving, snorkelling, fishing, kayaking, and dhow cruising over the next three days. Alternatively, sit back, grab a drink, and simply relax.
Over the next three days, you can do as much or as little as you choose. A quick stroll around Nuarro will show you that there are plenty of activities* available at your disposal. Enjoy a scrumptious breakfast, lunch, or dinner at the on-site restaurant with a panoramic view of the sea. Treat yourself to an exotic drink at the cocktail bar, or spend time relaxing at the beach.
For a little more action, head to the activity centre, which includes a fully equipped dive centre. Experienced PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) and IANTD (International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers) diving instructors are at your disposal to provide personal or group training for divers of all experience levels. Nuarro is an ideal spot for diving because of its direct access to the sea, the proximity of the continental shelf, and its remote location. It is also a hotspot snorkelling, fishing, and whale watching in season. Go kayaking to discover mangroves, secluded bays, and deserted beaches near the lodge. Join a sailing trip or a sunset cruise in traditional wooden dhows to private beaches for an exclusive beach picnic.
If you want to experience the bush, explore Nuarro’s conservation area—rich in birdlife—by following the eco trails on foot or on mountain bikes. Culture-seeking travellers will enjoy a visit to authentic cultural village and meet the friendly Macua people.
Visitors will not want to miss a day trip to Ilha de Mozambique (Island of Mozambique), a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its remarkable architecture, varied culture, and colourful history including tales of slavery and sea traders. Located on this island, the fortified city of Mozambique was a former Portuguese trading post on the route to India. See the city’s oldest existing fortress (St. Sebastian, 1558-1620), other defensive buildings, and numerous religious buildings (including many from the 16th century).
*Not all activities available are included in the trip cost. Please inquire about the pricing of specific activities.
After eight days of exhilaration and relaxation, you will be taken to Nampula Airport for your connecting flight home.
Requires a spirit of adventure and some degree of fitness, as the trip might consist of many activities or long journeys. These adventures involve walking, trekking, hiking, cycling, rafting, sea kayaking, or driving for long hours, at times for up to six to eight hours a day at a steady pace. The maximum altitude is 3000m, so it requires you to be reasonably physically fit because you may be travelling in extreme weather conditions. The trips are usually 6 to 12 days in duration.
