Your Tanzania safari holiday begins as you arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport and travel to Arusha for lunch. Post this you continue on to Karatu while stopping en route at some roadside handicrafts stalls for you to pick up some interesting knick knacks, traditional craft and beadwork, if you wish. Spend a part of the afternoon at Mto wa Mbu village, a melting pot of various Tanzanian cultures, to learn about lives of the locals.
Stay the night at Bougainvillea Safari Lodge, located on the outskirts of Karatu town. Bougainvillea's comfortable cottages have mosquito-netted king or twin beds, a fireplace, large bathroom with shower and a veranda from which to enjoy views of lush tropical gardens.
Today you visit Olduvai Gorge, also known as the "Cradle of Mankind". This is a site where you can see Laetoli hominid footprints, and the numerous fossilized hominid, animal and plant specimens. Four different types of hominid have been discovered here, with more than 60 remains added to the archaeological record. To learn more about the history of hominids and other mammals, a self-guided tour of Oldupai Museum is accompanied by a short lecture.
Then move on to Serengeti National Park. With your first glimpse of the rolling savannah, you'll understand why the Maasai people called it the "Siringitu", the place where the land moves on forever. Check into Seronera Wildlife Lodge here. The Lodge is artfully constructed around a rocky outcrop from glass and wood elements, perfectly blending into its surrounding. Nearby, several waterholes attract the most amazing animals, providing a unique opportunity for a close encounter with the Big Five. Elegantly decorated in traditional African style, Seronera's rooms offer king-sized beds and are fully equipped with ensuite bathrooms, central heating and a host of luxury amenities.
In the afternoon, head out on your first safari in Serengeti National Park, known for the annual Great Wildebeest Migration, and for its healthy population of the Big Five (lion, rhino, Cape buffalo, elephant and leopard). This UNESCO World Heritage Site is Tanzania's oldest national park, where over one and a half million white-bearded wildebeests, three hundred thousand Thomson's gazelles and over two hundred thousand zebras migrate to & from Masai Mara each year.
Spend the entire day on morning and afternoon safaris in Serengeti National Park spotting some of Africa's best wildlife and witnessing breathtaking landscapes. The Park is so vast that you see a variety of very diverse habitats within - plains, kopjes, rivers and forests.
Along with the Big Five, you should look for Thomson's and Grant's gazelles, topi, eland, waterbucks, hyenas, baboons, impalas and African wild dogs. The Serengeti is also home to about 500 bird species, including ostriches, secretary birds, Kori bustards, crowned cranes and marabou storks.
Bid farewell to the pridelands and head for Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. Ngorongoro offers some unique sights as you see herds of wild animals grazing on the crater floor. Descend 2,000 feet (over 600m) to the floor of the crater for a day tour. Explore forest areas inhabited by monkeys and elephants, visit the lake area where you may see flamingos, and delight in the views of the open savannah where lions hunt for food.
Stay the night at Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, strategically perched on the rim of the crater, affording unbelievable views plunging down over the crater floor. Built mainly from natural stone and local wood, the Lodge harmoniously merges into its natural surrounding. It is fitted with panoramic windows that offer superb views of the Ngorongoro's great bowl. All rooms are exquisitely decorated, with ensuite facilities, central heating systems and mosquito netting over the air vents.
Your Tanzania tour ends today as you travel back to Arusha for lunch, and then transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport to mark the end of your African Wildlife Safari.
